In late 1991, ACOG (the Atlanta Committee for the Olympic Games) organized a design competition for an olympic mascot. After reviewing submissions from 20 designers, a computer-animated mascot with the ability to change its appearance to represent different athletes and sports was chosen. 'What is it?' was announced the officiat mascot of the games in 1992. Initial reaction to WHATIZIT was not favorable among adults, but children were attracted to it. Its name was eventually shortened to 'Izzy'. A cheerful and colorful character!.
