Hellboy was summoned from Hell to Earth as an infant demon by Nazi occultists. Discovered by the Allied Forces, he was taken in by Prof Bruttenholm who soon after founded the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense (BPRD). There Hellboy quickly grew into a large red-skinned man with a tail and horns. Because he does not want to be seen as a demon, he files off his horns leaving behind circular stumps on his forehead.
